Simone van de Loo - Nostalgia
As a photographer, Simone van de Loo is interested in motifs that capture and visualise
bygone or fading environments.
With her photographs taken in car repair shops in the 2010s, she documents a male-
dominated, oil-stained working world and the longings of its protagonists, who leave their
mark but are not shown. The viewer is offered a glimpse into an authentic museum of a
bygone era.
This may evoke feelings of nostalgia, but it also encourages critical reflection on the
representation of male desire in a not-so-distant past.
In her ‘light pictures’ too, she prefers to seek out motifs that refer back to a distant past – a
car that now only has nostalgic value, a underground station that was designed many
decades ago, a beach kiosk that has long since served its purpose and somehow remained
standing.
At the same time, she attempts to explore the magic of light. She photographs the subjects of
her light pictures at dusk and uses her collage technique and the lighting she employs to
highlight parts that also glowed in the scene she saw.
For although pure photography is capable of showing the parts highlighted by the light, it is
only through staged lighting that the scene can be made visible in the way the photographer
saw it and wants to show it. Thus, her ‘light pictures’ shine even in a dark room and attract
the viewers attention.
Simone van de Loo lives and works in Frankfurt. After completing her law degrees, she
worked as an author for ZDF television for almost 20 years, producing film contributions and
reports. Through the design of film scenes, she approached photography and developed
various collage techniques. She has been showing her work in exhibitions and galleries since
2010. She has been represented by the Kunstverein Familie Montez since 2017
